Appropriate technologies for food security in low income communities
Opher Mendelson, TAU, Engineers without borders and the Israeli Forum for Sustainable Nutrition
Abstract
Food security in low income communities is affected by lots of challenges that are less common in developed countries. These challenges affect agriculture and food production, transport, access to markets, storage etc. Technology has a wide potential to deal with many of these challenges, but besides environmental effects, such as those of the green revolution, various attempts of technology transfer from developed countries faced lack of adaptation to local needs, conditions and culture. Appropriate technology is an approach that focuses on developing and adapting the technology to the local context, usually by being sustainable, affordable, simple, small, easy to maintain and adapted to local culture. The lecture will discuss the issue of using appropriate technology for promotion of food security in low income communities, including some case studies, mostly from Africa
