Title:

Going nuclear for climate mitigation: should we preserve existing U.S. nuclear power plants?

About the lecturer

Dr. Michael Buchdahl Roth is a Zuckerman Postodoctoral Fellow at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Public Policy. Dr. Roth earned his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Engineering and Public Policy, his Masters degrees at Duke University and University of Chicago, and his BA from Oberlin College. Dr. Roth’s research focuses on energy and environmental policy. Specifically, Dr. Roth focuses on energy systems modeling and has published work that: simulates how CO2 and local air pollution taxes could change the U.S. energy system, details the economics of preserving existing U.S. nuclear power plants as a carbon abatement strategy, and carried out a wind turbine feasibility study for Oberlin College. Dr. Roth’s most recent work focuses on low-carbon energy systems modeling in Israel. When Dr. Roth is also an avid mountain biker and a touring singer songwriter - www.mikerothmusic.com

Abstract

I will give a brief overview of how power systems work, talk a bit about historical electric generation in the U.S., and how emissions damages are calculated from CO2 and other air pollutants.

I will then present my research on whether the U.S. should preserve existing nuclear power plants. I am still putting the final touch on the talk.

I will likely include a couple slides specific to Israel, future energy needs in 2050, and show how nuclear could compare to solar and storage in Israel with regard to land use and costs.
