Exploring crowdsourced geographic data as a geospatial, environmental and sustainable infrastructure
פרופ' שגיא דליות
Personal location data has been singled out as one of the five primary 'big data' streams in the 2011 McKinsey report. User-Generated Content (UGC) in general, and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) and Participatory Mapping (PM) in particular, encapsulates the idea of using the internet and sensing technologies to create, share, visualize, and analyze geographic information and knowledge. It is already influencing common practices since it captures broad knowledge on the environment we live in, in all aspects of life, encompassing new and augmented mapping and location-based services to take place, applications and technologies to be developed. My talk will present projects, which are conducted at the The Environmental Crowdsourcing Laboratory (ECsL), that are focused on exploring and exploiting crowdsourced geographic data and derived information to make it a legitimate and reliable geospatial, environmental and sustainable infrastructure, shifting the way technologies are developed and used, and thus influencing and contributing to various prospective services.
