The Sustainable City
Prof. Steven Cohen
The Executive Director of Columbia University’s Earth Institute
and a Professor in the Practice of Public Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs
For the first time in human history, the majority of the people on the planet live in urban areas. If we are to avert climate catastrophe, we will need our cities to coexist with nature without destroying it. Professor Steve Cohen will discuss his new book, The Sustainable City, where he explores how the great cities of the twenty-first century can use sustainable methods to thrive economically while simultaneously providing a higher quality of life for their residents. He will provide an overview of what constitutes a “sustainable city” from an organizational management and public policy perspective, using examples and case studies from existing initiatives, projects, policies, and legislation in cities around the world that strive to align modern urban life and sustainability. He will also examine past trends and potential future ones, and look at the key aspects of a sustainable urban lifestyle. Professor Cohen’s talk will highlight how these aspects touch our lives on a daily basis, from the transportation we take, where our energy comes from, or what becomes of our food waste.
