Recent Insights into the Selectivity of Nanofiltration Membranes

ABSTRACT:

In contrast to reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, nanofiltration (NF) membranes have varying selectivity towards different electrolytes. Rejection mechanisms in NF include mainly steric (size) and Donnan (charge) exclusion. Despite the strong similarity between different monovalent anions in terms of their hydrated radius and charge, the rejection trend commonly observed in NF systems cannot be adequately explained solely by the aforementioned exclusion mechanisms. Our current research proposes and elucidates two emerging mechanisms related to size and charge exclusion and invites a future research of ion transport in atomically thin pores to better understand ion selectivity in nanopores.
