Many areas of sustainability and climate change policy highlight the importance of community as a critical component in bringing about a transition to a more sustainable and resilient society. What does community mean with reference to sustainability, and how does it make a difference? This lecture will look at the theory as well as practical examples of how communities influence sustainability, including how they shape local plans and priorities, enable new modes of consumption and production and improve resilience. We'll use this background to consider the significance of a university as a sustainable community, and more specifically the Porter community, and discuss among us how this can be leveraged to enhance environmental education and engagement
Bio
Dr. Shula Goulden manages research and academic partnerships in the Department of Environmental Studies and is Co-Director of the TAU Climate Crisis Initiative. Within these roles she is working to understand and advance the role that academia can play in strengthening climate policy and solutions. She studied geography and environmental policy in the UK and completed a PhD at Ben Gurion University on the development of green building policy in Israel. Her research and teaching interests focus on urban environmental and climate policy, with a particular interest in how discourse, technologies and governance interact to influence processes of environmental change
