Positive Sustainability
Dr. Dorit Kerret, Tel Aviv University
Positive sustainability is a new research field that evolved from the integration between environmental policy and positive psychology. The presentation will provide a brief overview of the current field and its potential for further research. One of the main goals of the field is to unravel behaviors that simultaneously promote environmental and individual wellbeing. Personal resources, such as hope, character strengths, self-control skills, positive emotions, mindfulness, and nature connectedness, were found to simultaneously influence both individual and environmental wellbeing. The same resources are connected to resilience and adaptation skills in the face of current environmental threats. Understanding the importance of these resources and methods to nurture them are important for designing effective public policy and educational systems. In addition, positive sustainability presents insights on approaches to effective policy making, such as the direct vs. indirect approaches and change theory
Bio
Dr. Kerret’s background is interdisciplinary, integrating education in law, environmental sciences, and public health from Tel-Aviv University and Harvard University. Her research is in the field of environmental governance or sustainable governance. She’s interested in how policy can improve sustainability on different levels: – the individual, the local, the national, and the global – and the relationship among these levels of governance. She is fascinated by the relationship of positive psychology to sustainability and their reciprocal effects on policy. Hence, her current research focuses on “positive sustainability,” an innovative concept that she developed, along with colleagues and students and it has been applied in disparate areas since that time
