On Climate Anxiety and Hope - The Psychology of Environmental Awareness in the 21st Century
Shiri Raz
Abstract
Eco-anxiety is anxiety about climate change issues and the planet's fate to the extent that it impairs daily functioning. Though yet to be defined by the DSM, the APA and ecoAmerica already depicted "eco-anxiety" in 2017 as "a chronic fear of environmental doom". Prevalent among younger populations, it is extensive: a survey conducted by the APA found that nearly half (48%) of young adults in the USA said they felt stress over climate change in their daily lives. Similar percentages of young people suffering from one degree or another of climate anxiety were found in surveys in Europe and other countries. This lecture will examine the aetiology of climate anxiety, its mental and cultural causes, symptoms and different ways to help and relieve those who suffer from it
