A Performative Approach to Academic Research and Communicating Science / Gil Markovitz

One of the dominant characteristics of the 21st century is the way that competition, commodification and consumerism - terms that are associated with economic and market-based activities - seep into every field of life. Using the examples of mass media and academia, I will present this tendency and its difficult consequences - consequences that are especially problematic when the two fields come together. 

I will then suggest a path that harnesses the skills, tools and methodologies of the performing arts to challenge these effects and perhaps even the tendency itself. This is a way of approaching the world, of thinking and acting, that can broaden the communication of knowledge and the way we explore and understand the wondrous world we live in.

Gil Markovitz is a performance artist and an expert in communicating academic knowledge to the public. She is the creator of the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation's Ha'Maabada (The Lab), a daily educational radio program and podcast.
