Talk description:
Over the course of the last few years, the sharing economy has rapidly transformed from a mere concept into a multi-billion global movement that has an impact on many areas in our lives. While it is often hyped as a disruptive force, driving the creation of a more sustainable value by putting into use underutilized assets and shifting power from centralized, top-down institutions to distributed peer-to-peer networks, there are still many questions surrounding the potential of this trend to generate substantial shift towards sustainability. In this talk, I focus on key aspects of the sharing economy, its ability to scale, shape the future of the economy and its potential to become a leading sustainable development strategy. In particular I will discuss my ongoing research projects including a study of the impact of the sharing economy on conventional businesses in terms of innovativeness and sustainability, my work with students exploring Millennials’ tendency to adopt alternatives to consumerism and move away from asset-heavy lifestyles, and a study of the opportunities for cities in adopting the co-creation model of Quirky, a crowd-sourced consumer product-development company.
