This talk presents the ecological condition of Israeli streams and the main human pressures driving their degradation, including water abstraction, flow diversion, wastewater inputs, and intensive land use. It shows how biological assessment, especially macroinvertebrate-based monitoring developed in line with Water Framework Directive principles, can be used to evaluate stream health, identify key stressors, support restoration planning, and track recovery. Drawing on the work of the Israel Center for Aquatic Ecology, the talk also highlights evidence that improved regulation, water reallocation, and restoration can lead to measurable ecological improvement in Israeli streams
