הסמינר השבועי: שדרוג במקום מיחזור טקסטיל - The New Denim Project

 דניאלה אנגלברג

Lecture will be given in English

Daniela Engelberg, an Environmental Studies Masters student at our school, and her sister, Arianne Engelberg, Creative Director of IRIS TEXTILES will present the inspiring story of their family sustainable business enterprise, IRIS TEXTILES, established in 1956 by their grandfather in Guatemala.

They were comitted to fight against the idea that textiles are disposable. There had to be a way for spinning, weaving, sourcing materials in a sustainable manner. Daniela and Arianne will share their story, discuss the impact of the industry on the environment, upcycling and circularity, and what they see for the future.

Upcycling is a philosophy and a design principle that includes 'recycling' but goes beyond this system by taking a 'whole system' approach to the vast flow of resources and waste through human society.

  • Redesigns the current, one-way linear industrial system into a circular economy

  • Modeled on nature's successful strategies

  • Restorative and regenerative by design

  • Aims to keep materials and components at their highest form of use and value at all time

  • Preserves and enhances natural resources, optimizes their yield and minimizes system risks by managing renewable sources and flows

  • Operates under a closed-loop system, a continuous positive design and development cycle
