This lecture explores the often-overlooked relationship between social work and the environment. While the social work profession is grounded in principles such as social justice, human rights, and wellbeing, environmental dimensions have historically remained implicit or marginal within its frameworks

We will trace key historical developments, from early welfare systems and the impacts of industrialization to the emergence of modern social work. Specific attention will be given to the contributions of early reformers such as Jane Addams, whose work highlighted the inseparability of social and environmental conditions

Building on this foundation, the lecture will examine the shift toward individualized approaches in the twentieth century and the resulting neglect of environmental perspectives. It will then discuss the re-emergence of these perspectives in the context of globalization, climate change, and increased engagement with knowledge from the Global South

Finally, selected insights from recent research will be presented, illustrating how environmental issues interplay with social inequalities and lived experiences. Overall, these will support a more nuanced, transformative and critical approach to the relationship between social work and the environment
